The police and Guyana Fire Service as well as representatives of the Region Six Administration and the Department of Education of Region Six were called in as word spread like wild fire that a student had fallen into the septic tank at the St Therese Primary school in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam.
The St Therese Primary School which is the only A Grade Primary School in the Region; houses over 900 students. Hundreds of parents raced to the school to enquire if their child was alright.
The police were forced to cordon off the area as the anxious parents descended on the school from various quarters forcing the authorities to lock the gate, in their quest to keep the situation under control.
The relevant personnel immediately got the word and after searching the septic tank with the help of a drug addict it transpired that the information was just a rumour. A physical count was made of the studens present in school that day and all were accounted for.
The rumour started around midday when a student reported to the school administration that another student had fallen into one of the uncovered manholes on top of the septic tank.
The school administration immediately got into action and called in the relevant authorities who responded promptly.
A decision was taken on the spot that the situation as it stands was dangerous enough and warranted some immediate action as it was decided that the uncovered manholes will be attend to immediately.
By night fall a contractor was being summoned to begin emergency work on the tank.
