six zones to contest
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a plethora of activities, has unveiled yet another competition, this time in partnership with Elizabeth Styles.
Details of this year’s Under-19 competition, which will be contested at the Inter Zone level, were unveiled in the Board Room of Hand in Hand Group of Companies yesterday.
Chairman of the BCB Anniversary Committee, Hilbert Foster in remarks, informed the gathering that the Board intends to play the game at every level like never before as they strive to strengthen the sport from the junior to the senior level.
The USA based Elizabeth Styles, a company that produces hair care products and cosmetics, has factories in China and India and headquartered in Port Washington and operates in over 37 countries worldwide and 19 in the Caribbean. The company has yet again committed to being indentified with the building of the game and the growth of the players in the Ancient County.
Head of Bisans Trading, the local distributor of the Elizabeth Styles line of products, Bissoondial Singh in his remarks stated that the company is committed to investing in Guyana’s cricket and had initially agreed to pump some four million dollars in the sport but has held back due to the current atmosphere that surrounds the sport.
“If this continues to go on then we may have to put a system in place to have a committee set up to run this coaching programme throughout Demerara and we will sooner or later start conversation with Essequibo Cricket Board.”
Singh said that his company is very proud and comfortable and sees the Berbice Board as one of the prime institutions for cricket development.
“We are really proud and indeed Elizabeth Styles is proud to be on board with these programmes.”
The Sub Zones that will be involved in this year’s competition are: West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, East Bank Berbice, Lower Corentyne, Central Corentyne and Upper Corentyne.
A top prize of $50,000 is set aside for the winner with $30,000 going to the losing finalist, while the man-of-the-final will receive $10,000 and a trophy. Foster also disclosed that Elizabeth Styles will be presenting hampers of its products to the players of the teams involved the finals.
Players with the caliber of Shimron Hetymer, Askay Homraj, Sharaz Ramcharran, Hakeem Hinds, Parmamand Ramdan, David Latchyna and Leon Andrews among others will be on show.
Foster extended gratitude to Singh and Elizabeth Styles on behalf of BCB President Keith Foster and the executive committee for their investment in the sport, assuring that the competition would be well organised and administered and funds used for intended purpose.
Previous winner of the tournament was Albion Cricket Club which had defeated Young Warriors in the final. (Franklin Wilson)
