Director of Sport Neil Kumar told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal on the East Coast Demerara is available for the national swimmers to prepare for future engagements.
Kumar stated swimmers from the Dorado, Orca, Silver Shark and Dolphin Swim clubs as well as athletes from Linden are currently using the pool for training which is being facilitated by national coach Stephanie Fraser from Monday to Saturday adding that the facility opens from 05:30 hrs.
He said that when swimmers reach a certain level then they are allowed to use the pool. “We only allow the stronger swimmers to use the facility because it may not be safe to have the beginners train there, so the clubs would normally select its members who must be strong swimmers to use the pool and that is reason the youngsters commence training at Colgrain which is much safer for them”, he added.
Kumar informed that they are planning to hold another International Life Guard certification programme later this year adding that the Inter Guiana Games will be held at the facility in March.
The Director explained that the equipment for the warm up pool is here, but they are waiting for the groundwork, which is being carried out by Innovative Engineering Consultancy Services, to finish.
Managing Director of the company Deoraj Dalchand said they encountered a few difficulties in laying the foundation. “We had some delays due to the depth and the weather, but we have a deadline to meet that is the first week in March before Myrtle Pool company returns to complete the facility which should take about two weeks so the pool should be up and
running in March”, he affirmed.
He stated that he is pleased with the ongoing works and they are on schedule stating that they had to ensure the existing pool was not affected while working on the foundation which is why they had to release the water from it for sometime.
Coach Fraser indicated that Guyana should be able to host the 2015 CARIFTA games once the warm up pool is completed within the specified time frame.
