A number of police officers, students of the New Opportunity Corps at Onderneeming and adults from various communities on the Essequibo Coast received certificates in recognition of their participation in a recent Information Technology programme.
They undertook the programme hosted by Zara Computer College at the Richard Fikhal College at Suddie.
The graduation took place yesterday at the Richard Fikhal College. It attracted Assistant Commissioner, Balram Persaud; Force Training Officer, Paul Williams, and Commander of “G” Division, Dale Alves.
Assistant Commissioner Persaud reminded the participants that the Guyana Police Force has a five year plan with the primary initiative of fostering better partnership with communities and to ensure that police officers receive advance training, especially in Tertiary Education.
Persaud is also of the view that while Information Technology is a critical component to aid in crime fighting, it also bridges the relationship between communities and police in the interest of fighting crime effectively.
Persaud called on the graduates, especially his police ranks, to continue to be proficient and to keep working on IT.
He reminded graduates that this is only the first phase in life and that they should continue on the road to greatness.
“Map the road ahead; know where you are going and don’t be sidetrack. Keep your eyes on the goal.”
Force Training Officer, Paul Williams, said that while the Guyana Police Force still faces serious challenges in recruiting the right set of persons for the force with the best of knowledge they exhibit, it is reliant on the assistance of the public.
He said that the Zara Group established a Computer Training College at the Richard Fikhal College last year to afford Information Technology training for police ranks.
That training has since been extended to students and adults on the Coast.
Some 140 persons graduated at the end of both theoretical and practical training. (Yannason Duncan).
