He has been to these shores on several occasions where he had successfully facilitated developmental courses on behalf of the
International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA). Now AIBA accredited referee/judge, Trinidadian, James Beckles returns once again, under the auspices of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), this time for a five days referee/judges seminar commencing tomorrow and concluding on Sunday.
The course was made possible through the efforts of Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar and the opening ceremony will be conducted at the Olympics House, Parade Street, Kingston at 10:00hrs tomorrow morning.
President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle said that Mr. Beckles has been of immense assistance to the development of local officials and his input is always welcome. He said that on his previous visit, Mr. Beckles had imparted valuable knowledge towards the improvement of local officials and he (Ninvalle) anticipates similar assistance.
During this visit, Mr. Beckles will deal extensively with the computerized scoring process. He had promised to represent Guyana’s cause at AIBA’s level for equipment. He has been successful and Technical Director, Terrence Poole had received the requisite items while on a training course in Kazakhstan. However, the device arrived in Guyana devoid of an integral component and was rendered useless. AIBA has since promised to have that anomaly rectified.
In the meantime, Mr. Beckles will use the missing component owned by the Trinidad Boxing Association (TBA) on the Guyana equipment to acquaint his local counterparts on the intricacies of the computer scoring system even as GBA officials await the arrival of theirs from AIBA.
This is Beckles’ third visit on a similar expedition but this time he will be tasked with the role of briefing local officials of the implications to the sport following the decision of AIBA officials that boxers could retain their Olympics eligibility despite
boxing professionally. The 5 days course concludes on Sunday with a ceremony at the Olympic House.
