Khemraj grabs 5-25 for winners
A controlled spell of spin bowling from Gurnauth Khemraj guided Mustak Mohamed XI to a convincing 70-run victory over Nazeer Mohamed XI in a feature 20 overs softball game played on Sunday last at Belle Plaine, Wakenaam.
Leg spinner Khemraj grabbed 5-25 from 4 overs to plot Nazeer XI’s demise as they were bowled out for 138 in reply to Mustak XI’s 208 all out in 19.2 overs.
Mustak XI batted first watched by a fair size crowd after winning the toss but lost two early wickets before Tulsieram Ramadeen and Navishaul Pooran steadied the innings with a third wicket stand of 66.
Pooran belted three sixes and two fours in a top score of 46 while Ramadeen smashed three sixes in scoring 33. Vijay Persaud then picked up three quick wickets before a late blitz by Faraz Abjal saw Mustak XI to their eventual total.
Abjal stroked four sixes in 27 while Persaud finished with 4-26, Chandrika Ragnauth 2-30 and Derwin Daniels 2-31. Nazeer XI reply got off to a bad start losing the wickets of Krishna Persaud (04) and Daniels (05) before Roopnarine Persaud and Shoaib Namaz stabilize the chase somewhat with stand of 45 for the third wicket.
Khemraj then bowled Namaz for 18 (2×6) while off spinner Afraz Abjal had Persaud taken in the deep for 21 (4×4). Ragnauth tried to keep his team in the hunt with a robust 41 which contained three sixes and one four, but the rest of the batting failed to fire and Nazeer XI were bowled out in 17 overs.
Satnarine Sahadeo supported man-of-the-match Khemraj with 2-22. Mustak XI received the winning prize of $65,000. The game was sponsored by overseas based Guyanese and former members of Allstar Softball team Faraz Abjal, Afraz Abjal, Krishna Persaud and Surendra Ramotar.
