– husband was beaten; autopsy on wife inconclusive
Detectives believe that they have identified the individuals who murdered Brazilians Joao Veloso do Nascimento and Edilene Fernandes Dos Santos, whose decomposed bodies were found on the Arimu trail, Region Seven.
This was disclosed yesterday by a top police official who also stated that the victims were most likely slain by Guyanese.
The official expressed confidence that the case would be solved.
Kaieteur News also understands that post mortem examinations, performed yesterday on the decomposing remains; showed that Nascimento was badly beaten, but the cause of death of his spouse was undetermined.
A police source said that Nascimento had severe head and facial injuries.
The post mortem was performed at the Bartica Hospital mortuary and Kaieteur News was told that the remains have since been buried.
The victims’ bound remains were found at a checkpoint on the Arimu trail, Region Seven last Saturday. They operated a dredge and other businesses in the interior and were residing at Bartica.
Reports disclosed that the couple left their camp at the Sand Hill area, Cuyuni, Region Seven, about a week ago on an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and were heading to Bartica, reportedly to purchase mining supplies with the intention of working through the Christmas holidays. However, they never arrived in Bartica.
Meanwhile, police are still investigating last Saturday’s murder of 53-year-old Brazilian gold miner Antonio Silva who was ambushed and shot in the back at Waiamu, Cuyuni/Mazaruni.
The attack reportedly occurred shortly after Silva had left his camp to purchase items for his business.
Sources said that the body bore shotgun injuries to the back.
According to reports, Silva, a dredge owner, had left his camp around 15:00 hrs on Saturday. He was reportedly accompanied by a young man who claimed that he saw when the miner was shot.
The youth reportedly fled back to camp and alerted the other crew members who returned to the scene and found Silva’s body.
