Family members of Special Constable Desiree Williams who collapsed and died while on duty at the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) early yesterday; are awaiting the result of a post mortem examination to fully ascertain the cause of her sudden demise.
Williams, of Lot 211 Garnett Street, Newtown, was discovered motionless by one of her colleagues, Lance Corporal Fraser around 06:00hrs yesterday at the back of the NIS building on Bent and Camp Streets, where she was working since Tuesday night at 23:00hrs.
Reports emerging from that area suggest that Williams, 53, was heading to the washroom when she collapsed and died. Police who later removed the lifeless body of the mother of three failed to discover any marks of violence.
Yesterday, the dead woman’s daughter, Thandi Fortune, said that her mother left home around 10:30 hrs on Tuesday to go to work.
“I bought a gas stove for her and we were fixing it up. We were also discussing about Christmas decorations. Everything with her seemed normal. She was healthy,” Fortune said. She added that her mother was next in line for a Guyana Police Force (GPF) promotion.
Fortune said that a little after 06:00hrs yesterday, someone from the NIS office called and informed her that her mother “took in” and that they were taking her to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in an ambulance.
“We went to the hospital but she wasn’t there so my cousin went over to the NIS office and they saw her there, lying on the ground. They had already covered her body,” Fortune said. She added that her mother only returned to work last Sunday after being on a three-day sick leave.
The daughter explained that last week her mother told her that she was experiencing severe chest pain and she was breathing short. She was taken to a private hospital and was given medication for gas.
“The medication worked because she wasn’t complaining for any pain. She went to work on Monday and Tuesday and she was fine,” Fortune explained. Williams leaves to mourn her three children, mother and siblings.
