Leg spinner Amir Khan bagged five wickets for 17 runs off 21.2 overs as the third and final round game in the Guyana Cricket Board organized Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), Hand-in Hand senior 4 day inter county tournament between Demerara and the President’s XI ended in a tame draw at the Uitvlugt community centre ground.
Khan bowled with good control and variation to help restrict the President’s XI, who batted first after winning the toss, to 102 in 55.2 overs after play began at 12:30hrs due to a soggy outfield.
Demerara made a valiant effort for first innings points, but after losing the wickets of Christopher Barnwell for 26, which included three sixes and two fours, and Chris Patadin (01); both to Kellon Carmichael (2-1), the captains after accepting that there is no prospect of a result, agreed to cease play with ten minutes and a minimum of 2.1 overs remaining in the last hour.
The President’s XI lost their first wicket with the score on 2 when Ryan Ramdass (01) was caught off left arm seamer Randy Knights at mid on in the day’s second over.
Robin Bacchus and Shemroy Barrington took the score to 57 before Bacchus played back and was leg before to Khan for 19 with two fours. The President’s XI then lost three more wickets without addition to the score. Hetymer (00) was run out in a terrible mix up with Barrington who failed to respond to a call which resulted in both batsmen ending up at the striker’s end. Barrington after hitting Trevon Garraway and Barnwell for boundaries was caught by Leon Johnson at first slip off Barnwell for a top score of 36 which contained three fours and two sixes, while Shaquille Williams (00) missed a full toss and was LBW to Khan.
Vishal Singh and Jason Sinclair then took the score to 75 before Singh was caught off Khan for 03. Romario Shepherd (02) opted not to play at a straighter ball from Khan and was trapped in front before off spinner Zaheer Mohamed had Sinclair LBW for 26 (1×4) at 91-8. Khan then accounted for Carmichael (04) and Steven Sankar (04) as the President’s XI were bowled out just after tea.
Khan who ended the tournament with 20 wickets from 4 innings was supported by Mohamed, Knights and Barnwell with 1 each.
Demerara commenced their innings in blistering fashion with Barnwell smashing pacer Shepherd for three sixes and two fours in the first over, but once he was dismissed the hope of first innings points quickly faded.
