An ‘A’ Field Sophia family is contemplating their next move after a fire yesterday morning destroyed the two-storey home they occupied. Pensioner Clarence Scott, his wife, and five other persons were said to be residing in the premises, but reports are that three persons were around at the time of the fire.
According to Mr. Scott, the family was in the home’s bottom flat when his son “took the smell of something burning.” After making checks, it was realized that the front room of the top flat was on fire. The son then alerted him about the blaze.
Mr. Scott’s wife, Sandra, ordered everyone out of the building as the flames rapidly consumed the entire top flat.
Meanwhile, the family is disappointed about the response of the fire service, stating that calls to the agency went unanswered. It was expressed that even neighbours tried to get the emergency workers, which eventually resulted in three tenders ending up on the scene.
Mr. Scott, a re-migrant, said that some $10M was put into his home, including $2.5M in savings. He said that at his age he cannot contemplate rebuilding.
While the cause of the fire is undetermined, speculation is that it may have been electrical in nature.
Nothing was saved from the relatively large, fully furnished house. The roof was completely destroyed and the floor of the top flat collapsed, while the lower flat suffered sustained extensive water damage.
The family might resort to spending some time in the garage in front of their burnt out property.
