Heavy overnight and early morning rain left almost the entire Georgetown flooded ruling out the DCC ground, which was under water yesterday, as a venue for the opening round of the GT&T, Hand-in-Hand four-day senior Inter-County cricket tournament which was scheduled to start today.
It also rained on Tuesday night on the East Coast of Demerara but the sun was out yesterday afternoon and if there is no more rain prospects of a start tomorrow at Enmore looks promising in the contest between Demerara and the President’s X1.
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) intends to shift venues in the City and the Police ground is the first option of an alternative ground for a start in Georgetown in the match between Berbice and Essequibo. If the inclement weather abates a weekend start is likely.
The recently refurbished Enmore Community Centre is one of fastest drying cricket grounds on the East Coast and with the covers protecting the pitch the outfield should be dry enough to facilitate play by tomorrow
According to GCB officials the Board is monitoring the weather and will announce by this afternoon a new commencement date for the four-team competition. (Sean Devers)
