Although she was convinced that a successful kidney transplant would have improved her wellbeing, 35-year-old Reena Sultan is again required to undergo urgent medical care to save her life.
It was almost close to six years ago that the young wife and mother of one underwent the transplantation operation in India which allowed for her life to be considerably improved. She explained to this publication that it was after about five years had elapsed, her body began rejecting the transplanted kidney which was donated by her brother. The two were accompanied to India by her husband Fazil Sultan.
The ailing woman had secured funding from a number of organisations and individuals, as well as the Ministry of Health, to facilitate the crucial trip to India in 2008. She disclosed that although she was required to return to India six months after the operation, the lack of finances saw her being unable to do so. She had, however, been gaining medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital over the years.
Reena Sultan said yesterday that although she was seeking care at the public hospital it was not forthcoming, as there is no in-country nephrologist to attend to her. Her condition was gradually deteriorating.
Moreover, she sought to keep in contact with the doctors who attended to her in India via email, and they advised that she required the care of a nephrologist. Her only hope was to make an appointment to be attended to by a visiting nephrologist at a privately-operated dialysis centre.
However, her condition continued to deteriorate, so much so that she is required to travel to India as soon as possible to gain treatment that could help heal her failing kidney. This level of medical care is reportedly not offered here.
According to the woman’s husband, the earliest possible flight they have been able to secure to travel to India is in January. Added to this, he said that efforts are being made to raise finances to the tune of US$22,670 to facilitate the necessary medical care.
A correspondence from the Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, India, dated November 20, 2013, states that “Ms Reena Sultan must be accorded all possible support to rush to…India for evaluation and treatment on an urgent basis…”
The correspondence went on to state that Reena Sultan has to be under the care of nephrologists and transplant surgeons immediately, since she is in dire need of advanced tests and must be administered medication under supervision.
The couple, of 199 Charlotte Street, Georgetown, is therefore appealing to the general public and businesses to render financial support. Those desirous of assisting can contact them on telephone numbers: 227-4167 and 609-0616. Funds can also be deposited to Republic Bank Account #298-935-8.
