A 38-year-old goldsmith and father of three was on Friday robbed as he was about to leave his business located in Wales Market.
Latchman Paul, also known as Ravi, of lot 321 Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara, said that he was robbed of over $1M in gold jewelry that he had on him.
According to the Paul around 16:30 hours on Friday he was closing his shop when he met two schoolgirls that he had sold jewelry to earlier in the day. The gold smith related that the girls came to return the items since they said their relatives told them that the gold they purchased would fade fast.
Paul said that he reclaimed the jewelry and refunded the money to the girls and just as they walked off, two men approached him. One of them who was armed with a gun placed it to his face and instructed him not to move or make a sound, while his accomplice robbed him of his belongings. They both escaped into the cane fields aback of the Market.
Paul then explained that he quickly made his way to the police station where he related to the officers there what transpired. The officers accompanied him to the crime scene and went in the direction that the bandits went. A search was conducted by the police in the cane fields but due to the lateness of the hour and darkness stepping in the search was abandoned.
According to the businessman, the police mentioned to him that the robbery seemed as a set up; that the schoolgirls were used as a decoy and might be involved. The police are currently investigating the matter.
