– Guyana solidarity with Cuba Movement
The U.S. economic embargo on Cuba has been a topic at the United Nations General Assembly meeting for the past twenty-one years and according to President of Guyana Solidarity Movement with Cuba, Halim Khan every year an overwhelming majority of nations vote to condemn the U.S. embargo policy.
This October 29th, for the twenty-second year in a row, the Cuban government will ask the United Nations to condemn the basis of the current U.S. policy towards Cuba, the U.S. economic embargo.
Khan related that the organisation is joining with the rest of the world in calling on the US to lift the unjust trade embargo on Cuba.
He explained that last year, 188 countries voted against the embargo while three countries were in favour of maintaining it.
“Those countries…the United States, of course, Israel and Palau (a tiny island in the Pacific). The numbers say it all. The rest of the world is against the out-dated policy of the United States towards Cuba. This year won’t be any different, except that we want to make a big deal about it so that the media can’t ignore it again,” Khan noted.
Last week the Cuban embassy in Georgetown held the news conference, where it announced the draft U.N. resolution calling for an end to the embargo.
Although the U.S does not see Cuba today as a threat to its national security, Khan said the blockade on Cuba is not only in violation of international laws, but is also counter to international human rights law, which prohibits any embargo on raw materials for food and medicine.
“We seek to have a Region of peace, a Region of tranquility and a better world which we can all live in as brothers and sisters in humanity. Once again in Oct 29th the UN will vote against this injustice. Let’s raise our voices to condemn the blockade that Cuba has been suffering for more than 50 years.”
