Tameshwarie Narharry, the woman whose lover set her alight in her house on Wednesday, succumbed shortly after noon yesterday in the Burns Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The 51-year-old Narharry, also known as Shantie Mohamed, had suffered first-degree burns to most of her body.
According to reports, the woman’s paramour, 52-year-old Patrick Seepaul, had doused her with gasoline at around 05:00 hrs on Wednesday before setting fire to the two-flat house the couple had rented at Zorg, Essequibo. The upper flat was destroyed.
He fled the scene, but was later found dead behind the partly burnt house. Police believe that the suspect ingested a poisonous substance.
Narharry’s sister, Saywattie Persaud, said that she knew little about her sibling’s partner, but concluded that the man had acted out of jealousy.
One of Narharry’s daughters said that she was awakened by her mother’s screams of ‘fire’, early Wednesday morning and saw the building in flames. She then assisted her mother, who was severely burnt, out of the building.
Another relative recalled hearing Narharry exclaiming that she felt something being thrown on her during her sleep.
Neighbours who successfully contained the fire to the burning building spoke of smelling gasoline around the burnt-out house.
