A 20-year-old truck driver yesterday pleaded not guilty to four counts of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court
The charges read that on October 18, the accused, Ritesh Bhagwandin, on the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara drove motor lorry GPP8495 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Felix Marc, Laurette Evans, Phulmattie Samaroo and Delroy Evans.
It is alleged that at about 11:30hrs the accused was driving the said vehicle along the west side of the road at a very fast pace and then proceeded to overtake an unknown motor lorry which was parked on the roadway.
However, in doing so he ended up in the path of mini bus BPP3521 whose driver quickly swerved in an effort to avoid a head-on collision. However, this was to no avail, the right side of the lorry crashed into the front right side of the said minibus.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru in open court, stated that after the collision Felix Marc, who was the driver of the minibus and Delroy Evans died on the spot while six passengers received injuries and were all taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The court heard that Laurette Evans and Phulmattie Samaroo died while receiving treatment and the rest of the passengers were admitted to the said institution.
The accident was reported to the Madewini Police Station and the investigations which were conducted led to the defendant being arrested and charged.
Prosecutor Mangru thereafter objected to bail on account of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. In his objection, he highlighted the penalties attached to such a charge and stated that if granted bail the defendant is not likely to return for trial.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry refused bail and Bhagwandin was remanded to prison where he will await the commencement of his trial on November 15.
