Relatives of 28-year-old Travis Semple, who lost his right hand on Sunday night following a smash-up on the Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice Public Road, are counting their blessings that doctors have managed to save the man’s leg.
According to the man’s sister yesterday, doctors were contemplating amputating Semple’s right leg as a method of stopping severe internal bleeding.
However, surgeons of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) managed to stem the bleeding without having to undertake the drastic procedure.
Semple, a resident of Hopetown, West Coast Berbice underwent emergency surgery at the Fort Wellington Hospital shortly after the accident to remove his mangled hand.
At around 21:00hrs on Sunday, Semple, and his friend Abocy Lynch, also 28 years old and a resident of Hopetown, were rushed to the GPHC after their motorcycle collided head-on with a car.
Kaieteur News was told that Lynch and Semple were on motorcycle CG 8402, travelling at a fast rate, and were attempting to overtake a line of vehicles heading east, when they collided with a car, PMM 4719.
This resulted in the car veering out of its lane, and slamming into a black Premio, PMM 8207, which was heading in the same direction as the motorcyclists.
Lynch, who suffered a broken right leg, and several other injured persons, have been discharged from the hospital.
