The University of Guyana (UG) was established in 1963 by the PPP Government with the aim of churning out quality human resources to advance the development of Guyana. Decades after, Government desires a better institution.
This was the assertion by Dr. Roger Luncheon during his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing last week, while announcing the commencement of UG’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Assessing the university today, he believes Government needs to concentrate on its output and quality because these justify the political capital for the material investment that indeed the output warrants.
He opined when the then Premier of British Guiana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, prior to 1963, conceptualized the university, he saw the role of the institution as contributing to build the country. While there are arguments that the Private Sector should invest heavily in UG, Dr. Luncheon believes Central Government’s contribution would help the university achieve its goals.
He deemed the creation of the university a record-breaking action by a British Colony, British Guiana.
“Cabinet recognized the visionary leadership of the 1961-1964 PPP/C Government that established the institution. Cabinet recognized the valiant efforts of Dr. Jagan and his colleagues in the Government as they persevered in the activities to achieve their dreams of a university in Guyana,” Dr. Luncheon said.
