Residents of Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara are holding their breaths and hoping that by the time the much anticipated year-end rains come, the main drainage canal will be cleared, sparing them of disaster from flooding.
For close to one year now the central sideline canal which drains the entire community as well as the neighbouring village of Non Pariel has been clogged up with overgrown weed.
So clogged up is the canal that cattle farmers can actually walk in it to cut grass for their animals.
“The grass is about four feet tall in dis canal. We contact all de Minister dem. Irfan Ali, Anil Nandall, Edghill, all de Minister dem and dey just promise and dem don’t do nothing at all concerning dis canal,” an irate resident told this newspaper.
“The farmers ah suffer, also the residents here ah suffer. The last rain wha fall, de farmers completely flood out,” another resident added.
He explained that during that period, the Guyana Sugar Corporation was forced to execute emergency work to save its crop.
“All dem cane and so bin duck. And you can just imagine if GuySuCo get it cane duck, what about farmers. The farmers completely lost everything,” the resident added.
Apart from the farmers’ losses, the situation also poses a health threat as many persons have reported contracting diseases as a result of the stagnant water in sections of the clogged up canal.
Their complaints to the several Ministers of the government who visit the Peoples Progressive Party stronghold from time to time have fallen on deaf ears.
“Today, tomorrow, dis Minister come and people complain, dem promise fuh get a Hymac fuh clean, and on to now dem never do nothing,” a resident stated.
The residents who spoke to this newspaper are convinced that the government has neglected them and only show interest in them whenever they need their votes at election time.
