After lobbying at the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), last week, Albion Community Centre Cricket Club ground regained first class cricket status.
It has been over three years since the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club ground lost its first class status when it failed a WICB inspection.
Subsequently, lots of work was done to rebuild the outfield and ensure it was completely covered with grass, one of the stands was refurbished, and some work was done on the commentators’ booth. Also, the Government of Guyana will start to install flood lights during the month of October. Hence, the facility was deemed fit to have first class matches and other high level competitive cricket.
Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board and WICB Director Anand Sanasie had promised the Albion Club, in a meeting a few months ago, that he will do his best to ensure first class cricket returns to Albion. He has since delivered on that promise with one of the Bangladesh touring team matches fixed to be played at Albion.
The first match that greeted the ground after the declaration was the final of the GCB/Pepsi Senior Inter-County Competition which was played on Sunday October 29, between Demerara and Berbice.
Then on October 19, 2013, the sixth match between West Indies and Bangladesh in an Under-19 50-Over Tournament will be competed at the venue.
Manager of the club, Muthuswammie Permaul, expressed his jubilation about having cricket returning to Albion. According to him, cricket fans in the area are also excited and are eagerly awaiting the matches. He added that it would be a blessing to have cricket at the venue whenever first class cricket and higher level of cricket is played in Guyana.
Albion Community Centre Cricket Club is located in Corentyne, Berbice, and house one of Guyana’s most famous cricket grounds.
It is among the first set of clubs that played cricket in Berbice during the plantation era. And apart from being a venue for first class matches for decades, it was the venue for the first ever One Day International in the West Indies.
Also, it produced a number of well-known cricketers; among them are Shew Shivnarine (1st Albion player to play test cricket), Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, and Jonathan Foo and most recently Gudakesh Motie Kanhai.
