Guyanese turned out in their numbers last weekend, to participate in the two-day wellness camp hosted by the Ministry of Health.
The event served as part of the Caribbean Wellness Day Observance, which is usually commemorated on the second Saturday in September. The event was also part of the MOH Wellness Warriors’ activities.
Participants gathered at Square of the Revolution, Georgetown, where more than a dozen booths were set up to offer numerous health services to the public.
These services included blood pressure testing, testing for diabetes, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood screening, cholesterol testing, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, screening for malaria, audiology and ophthalmology services as well as dental checkups offered by the Cheddi Jagan Dental School.
Also on site were two certified medical doctors, offering health checkups and advice on various health issues. A special booth was also set up to offer pharmaceutical services.
Participants were even afforded the opportunity to interact and raise their concerns within the health sector with the Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran and other officials from the Ministry.
Recommendations were granted, to persons in need of spectacles by Eye Care Guyana. The prescriptions gave such persons the opportunity to obtain their lenses and frames for only $10,000 from Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Under this initiative, a blood donation drive, conducted by the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS), yielded 39 units of blood.
As part of the activities to promote healthy lifestyles, the Ministry of Health will be hosting a wellness competition, which will run for three months.
The purpose of the competition is to promote awareness of chronic diseases and of the methods that can combat such ailments. The “Weight No More” is sponsored in part by the Ministry of Health and Harris Arts. Also included is a television programme about everyday Guyanese, public figures and health professionals.
The programme will be used to broadcast the views of various persons on the topic.
According to Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, healthy lifestyles play a major role in combating chronic diseases.
“It is quite a comprehensive activity, to promote, this year we are placing a lot of focus of the use of physical exercise and healthy lifestyles to combat chronic and non communicable diseases.”
The Minister explained chronic diseases are among the leading cause for mortality in the world.
Ramsaran said that in addition to the competition, a wellness camp will be launched to promote physical activities. The camp will facilitate a series of robust sporting activities as part of the plan to combat Non Communicable Diseases (NCD).
This year, Caribbean Wellness Day was celebrated under the theme “Safeguarding the Health of Our Youth for a Brighter Future.”
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
