After completing two trial matches over the past week the senior selection committee of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has selected a strong 24-man squad in preparation for the Pepsi Inter County 50-over cricket tournament scheduled to begin on September 21.
The squad will be coached by former First Class left-hander Hubern Evans and the final fourteen will be named prior to the start of the competition. Those selected were expected to begin training at the Albion ground from yesterday.
Test players Sewnarine Chattergoon, Assad Fudadin, Narsingh Deonarine and Veerasammy Permaul are among the players selected in the Berbice squad.
Meanwhile, the Demerara squad is expected to be finalized today according to Chairman of the Demerara selection panel. Two Demerara Trials were held last Thursday and Friday at Bourda but Test players Ramnaresh Sarwan, who is still nursing a wrist injury and Shiv Chanderpaul who is expected home by month end, did not participate although they were named in the squad.
Leon Johnson who also played in the two matches, is unavailable due to West Indies ‘A’ team commitments in India. It is understood that either Chris Barnwell or Steven Jacobs will lead the Demerara side.
Demerara face Essequibo at Bourda in the opening game before taking on Berbice on September 24 at the same venue. Berbice and Essequibo clash in the final round on September 26 at Bourda.
The final is fixed for Albion on September 29 between the two top teams in the Competition.
The Berbice training squad read: Sewnarine Chattergoon, Anthony DeAndrade, Shimron Hetmyer, Shawn Perreira, Assad Fudadin, Jason Sinclair, Narsingh Deonarine, Krishnadat Ramoo, Jonathan Foo, Waqar Hassan, Rajiv Ivan, Kevin Ramdeen, Anthony Bramble, Clinton Pestano, Veerasammy Permaul, Keyron Fraser, Devendra Bishoo, Seon Hetmyer, Keon Joseph, Joemal LaFleur, Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Devon Clements and Eon Hooper.
