New figures which have now been provided to Kaieteur News show that the total cost for the recently renovated Georgetown Magistrate’s Court is $160M and not the initial $130M which was earlier reported.
Kaieteur News understands that a breakdown of the funds allocated for the project revealed that $56, 518, 576 was budgeted for the extension and additions to the court; another $19,319, 475 was earmarked for the rehabilitation for the five courts that were already in the building, while $13, 348,911 was plugged into the project, to cater for an increase in the price of materials for the additional courts which were being built.
For additional works, which included individual walkways for each magistrate, plumbing system and public outdoor washroom, $20,026,871 was added.
A further $24,721,587 was for the purchase and installation of AC units for the building; another $6, 231, 650 went towards the procurement and purchase of a transformer. Construction of two more courtrooms bringing the number to 11, along with revetments and parking lots to the southern and northern sides of the building came up to $22,772,296. There was also the supervisory service that costs $1,568,000.
On Wednesday Junior Finance Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill said that there is light at the end of the tunnel as he referred to the newly completed Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He said that they have expanded the building to accommodate eleven courts up from five.
He said that all the Georgetown Magisterial courts will be housed in the same new building at Brickdam. Edghill said that this brings an end to renting the building at Middle Street.
He had told Kaieteur News that all of the courtrooms and offices are air-conditioned and sound proof. Edghill further told Kaieteur News that there is parking for all of the Magistrates on the northern and southern sides of the building. He said that the police outposts along with both the female and male holding cells have been rehabilitated.
All the Magistrates will have their private chambers and individual walkways leading up to the courtroom.
