The Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) 50-over competition kicks off tomorrow with four matches across
the county. The competition, which is being used to select the Essequibo team to take part in the upcoming Guyana Cricket Board 50 overs tournament, will see East Bank Essequibo hosting Bartica at the Parika Salem ground, Leguan entertaining Wakenaam at Enterprise, North battling South Essequibo at Devonshire Castle and Central Essequibo coming up against Pomeroon at Imam Bacchus ground.
Former national U-19 wicketkeeper batsman Kevon Boodie will lead the East Bank team which also includes Trevor Benn, Jason Heyliger, Mark Braitwaite and Julio Jones. Bartica is yet to name their team.
Leguan will have home advantage when they face archrivals Wakenaam. Their captain Muneshwar Jattan is expected to lead the batting department with support from Shahad Razack and Huckumchand Savitir. Pacer Kevin Gordon and off-spinner Tulsieram Premnauth is expected to spearhead their bowling department. One of the host biggest hurdles will be to contain National U-19 player Ricardo Adams who is expected to be named captain of the visiting team. With the inclusion of hard hitting batsmen Navishaul Pooran and Kemo Paul, pacer Chandreka Ragnauth and left arm spinner Imran Khan, Wakenaam have the fire power to go all the way in this tournament.
One of the most dominant teams of recent in the Cinderella County, South Essequibo will look to start the competition on a winning note and will depend heavily on Royan Federicks, Anthony Adams, Ricardo Peters, Mark Gonsalves and Raj Parbattie. Their opponents North, as they have proved in the past, is not an easy team get past and with the inclusion of Mark Tyrell, Vishwanauth Lall, Uvindra Balgobin, Rajiv Manichand and Greyson Paul, South can look forward to an epic battle.
Central Essequibo will be favourites when they face Pomeroon. Exciting fast bowler Ronsford Beaton will lead their challenge with support from Herry and Herrell Green, Rovindra Parsram and Parmesh Parashotam, while Pomeroon will rely on Chris Williams, Andrew D’Aguiar, Sherman Austin, Kenneth DeAgrella and Eric Gomes as they attempt to turn back their challenge.
The semi-finals and final will be played on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
