The Jamaica Tallawahs defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by seven wickets with 15 balls to spare to lift the inaugural Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) T\20 tournament last evening in Trinidad and Tobago.
Chris Gayle and Andre Russell featured in an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 62 as the Tallawahs successfully chased 128.
The Tallawahs were flawless at the toss and asked the Guyana Amazon Warriors to bat in front of another sellout crowd which graced the Queens Park Oval to witness an exciting climax to the LCPL. Lendl Simmons and Williams Perkins added 20 for the opening stand before Perkins, who slammed one four and a six, attempted to loft David Bernard Jnr over the ropes and was well caught by Danza Hyatt for 14 in the fifth over.
Lendl Simmons smashed the first ball bowled by Nikita Miller over mid wicket for a six, but the Warriors suffered another setback when Tillakaratne Dilshan was bowled off the inside edge off Bernard before he had scored to leave the score at 27-2. Denesh Ramdin was promoted up the order, but the Tallawahs bowlers made scoring difficult with controlled bowling.
However, Ramdin pulled a short ball from Andre Russell to the mid wicket boundary then smashed him for a maximum the next delivery before Simmons drove Miller through cover for four to bring up their half century partnership. Simmons then lofted Miller to long off where Kumar Sangakkara took a comfortable catch at 79-3; he departed for 40 which came off 44 balls with three fours and two sixes.
Sunil Narine joined Ramdin and deposited Muttiah Muralitharan over mid wicket for a maximum before he was run out for 09 to make it 94-4 in the 17th over. Chris Gayle put the Warriors under further pressure when he bowled Ramdin for 29 which came off 34 deliveries and contained two fours and one six to leave score at 94-5.
James Franklin and Chris Barnwell tried desperately to give their team a decent total in the closing stages of the innings, Franklin hit Gayle for consecutive sixes before Barnwell straight drove him for a boundary in the final over as the Warriors who allowed 62 dot balls ended on 128-5 off their allotted 20 overs. Franklin ended unbeaten on 17 while Barnwell was not out on 09. Bernard was the most successful bowler with 2-18 for 4 overs, while Miller and Gayle had one each. Muralitharan and Vernon Philander although failed to take a wicket backed up well conceding thirteen from four and eight from three overs respectively.
Chadwick Walton and Chris Gayle began the Tallawahs response, watchfully as they added 26 for the opening stand before Walton who smashed Dilshan to the cover boundary and hoisted him for a straight six was trapped leg before by the Sri Lankan in the fourth over for 13. Gayle and Kumar Sangakkara brought up their team fifty in the tenth over, but Barnwell gave the Warriors hopes when he had Sangakkara well caught by Franklin at mid wicket for 13 at 61-2. Malinga was brought back and had immediate success when he sent back Jermain Blackwood caught and bowled for 03 to leave the Tallawahs at 67-3 in the 12th over.
Gayle smashed Barnwell with disdain to the cover boundary while Russell got an outside edge to third man for four; he then followed up with a six over extra cover before Gayle finished the over which cost 20 runs with a four to third man which resulted from an outside edge.
Russell then stroked Malinga to the long off fence, but Malinga responded with a toe crushing yorker which Russell somehow managed to keep out before Russell caressed him for another boundary to bring up the triple figure mark. The duo batted sensibly and saw their team home as they ended on 129-3 in 17.3 overs. Gayle ended unbeaten on 47 off 48 balls with six fours while Russell made 33 not out off 18 balls with five fours and a six. Malinga, Dilshan and Barnwell grabbed one apiece for the Warriors.
