THE 13th Edition of the Albion Cricket Academy commenced last Monday at the Albion Community Centre Ground in the Ancient County of Berbice.
In declaring the one week academy, organized by the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club open, Human Resources Manager of Guysuco’s Albion/Port Mourant Estate Vemen Walter showered praise on the President and Executives of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club for ensuring the continuation of this annual academy for the past thirteen years.
Walter, a former president and current Secretary of the club, took the opportunity to congratulate the over 60 young cricketers in attendance for having seen it fit to be part of an activity which will undoubtedly assist them tremendously in the development in all aspects of their game. The former Guyana Under-15 Manager also pointed out that the game of cricket has evolved so much over the years and will continue to do so and as such, young cricketers will have to be prepared for the challenges ahead if they are to succeed and cricket academies such as this, will certainly assist.
He urged participants to pay keep attention to what they will be taught over the one week period and to ensure that whatever is learnt is put into practice.
President of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club, Lloyd Kanden, in his brief address to the gathering challenged the participants to make full use of the academy so that Albion will continue to be the key to Berbice and Guyana’s cricket. The long serving president also applauded the work of the Club’s Cricket Development Committee to ensure that the 13th Academy is staged.
Kanden also thanked those who have played significant roles in the success of the Cricket Academy over the years, including Walter, Orvin Mangru and Muthuswammi Permaul.
Walter along with former Secretary Tariq Aziz was the two individuals who were responsible for the emergence of the Albion Cricket Academy.
Coordinator, Orvin Mangru, disclosed that the aim of the academy is to expose young cricketers to the fundamentals of the game. The packed programme includes lectures in the morning sessions on topics such as Discipline, the cricketer as a role model and as an ambassador, etiquette and social grace, importance of fitness, laws of the game, importance of education, leadership, HIV & Aids, History of Cricket among others, while in the afternoon sessions, they will be exposed to the basics in batting, bowling and fielding.
Chairman of the Club’s Cricket Development Committee Muthuswammi Permual, who reminded the participants of Albion’s rich history in producing top quality cricketers, encouraged them to bring along a family or friend to be part of the academy. Permaul also thanked Republic Bank, Sterling Product, Universal DVD Club, D. Balram Shane General Store, Rite Choice Supermarket, Guysuco and Geddes Grant, sponsors of the academy.
Among the resource personnel expected to deliver lectures at the academy are former Headmaster and first class umpire Dhiriendranuth Somwaru, former Guyana Manager Carl Moore, Berbice Cricket Board Secretary Angela Haniff, Walter, Permaul and Mangru together with cricket coaches Andre Percival, Sewnarine Chattergoon and current national cricketers Jonathan Foo and Anthony Bramble.
The academy is open to young cricketers male and female between the ages of 10 to 19 years.
