Dear Editor,
Reading your newspaper (Tuesday August 20 I read contradictory statements made by APNU in reference to calling on the Minister Of Home Affairs, first to control crime in the country, then a call on the Government to confirm the Commissioner of Police to his present
post.
APNU must understand that the Minister cannot micromanage another organization and that the Commissioner is fully responsible to manage his force in an efficient and competent manner. This means that he must be involved with all his managers from the different
divisions, who are responsible to map crime trends and deploy resources to address the situation.
The situation will continue in Guyana until police administrators are held accountable for crimes in their divisions, and the police commissioner should also be held responsible for not coming down hard on his subordinates. Yes, the crime trend can go down, but only when the commissioner of police decides that those in charge get to work immediately and deploy the police accordingly, and in a proactive manner to put a dent on the alarming crime rate in the country. It can be done, it should be done, it must be done.
The citizens of Guyana deserve no less if the police cannot stand behind their pledge to serve and protect.
APNU has to know that the commissioner is doing a poor job in controlling crime in the country and instead of going after the Minister Of Home Affairs, their anger should be directed at the administrator in charge of the force.
The FBI academy from time to time each year teaches a class for police chiefs in the USA and other parts of the world, but an application has to be made to attend this free class. The government needs to send the police commissioner to learn the techniques needed to control crime in Guyana.
