– former students plan commemorative week
The East Ruimveldt Government Secondary School (ERGSS) will observe its golden anniversary as an academic institution on September 9, 2013.
The Executive Committee of the ERGSS Guyana Alumni has planned a commemorative week of activities to bookmark this important milestone in the life of an institution that has contributed significantly to the development of Guyana and the Diaspora. The Theme is “Celebrating 50 years of Achievement”.
The programme will include an Opening Ceremony on Sept. 9th at 10.00 hrs, the introduction of a guest speaker; a history of the school; presentation of certificates of commendation to 50 past students who have performed well in various fields; a photographic exhibition form September 9 – 14 and a Day of Nostalgia on Saturday, September 14, from 14:00 hours.
The latter will take the form of reaching across generations to reflect on school life. Ex-students can share stories about various things they did. The former students may wear clothing which represents the school uniforms of their particular eras.
The organizers plan to divide the 50 years into ten academic generations. These are: 1963 – 1968, 1968- 1973, 1973 – 1978, 1978 – 1981, 1981 – 1986, 1986 – 1991, 1991 – 1996, 2001 – 2006, 2006 – 2011, 2011 – 2013.
A release stated that East Ruimveldt opened its doors in 1963. Over the years, it has been the leader in the delivery of education in the South Georgetown area, mainly through the loyal dedication and hard work of parents, members of the community and the teachers.
For about ten years, East Ruimveldt Secondary School was the last building in East Ruimveldt. Situated at what was then ‘Back Road’, it was called “Back Road School”, later shortened to “Back School”.
The 1970s were the glory days for sports at East Ruimveldt Secondary. The Circle Tennis team, led by Juliette Fredericks played unbeaten in 1977. The athletics teams, led by Gordon and Vigil Lewis, Wilbert Angoy – one-time National High Jump record holder, Lana Manning, Roxanne La Roc and Faith Brown were also outstanding. The school’s netball, cricket, female volleyball and football teams also performed well. In addition, many former national football players honed their skills on its playfield.
The academic success of the school grew in tandem with its success in sports.
