The Banks Malta Supreme under-13 cricket tournament was launched yesterday at Thirst Park where the Final of the seven-team tournament will be played.
In its second Edition, the competition was previously a Pee-Wee competition and sponsored by Tropical Mist and is scheduled to commence next Wednesday weather permitting.
Among the gathering were the Captains of the Transport and Everest teams Adrian Hinds & Yeudistir Persaud respectfully.
Former National Cricketer Neil Barry, the Vice-President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) collected the sponsorship cheque from Banks’ Brands Manager Clayton McKenzie.
Barry thanked the Beverage Company for their support at a time when businesses are under pressure to lend funding to events due to the economic climate. He added that many companies preferred to sponsor the bigger events and had little time for junior sports.
“This is an opportunity for us to mould our young Cricketers from the formative age and hopefully they can develop into top International players. The excitement is now generated by T20 cricket and the top players can make a good living from cricket,” Barry said.
Barry explained that Food for the Poor had donated the balls for the competition which will see three matches being played per day.
In addition to the Final being played at Thirst Park, three other venues-GNIC, GYO & MYO- will be used.
Troy Peters, Communications Manager for Banks DIH, said his Company is pleased to support the two-week competition, while GCA’s competitions Committee Chairman Shaun Messiah informed that six clubs will be involved in the tournament with DCC fielding two teams. DCC ‘A’ are the defending champions.
The matches will be 20-over affairs and the first game begins at 10:00hrs. (Sean Devers)
