A five wicket haul by leg spinner Steven Sankar guided Demerara to a 45 run victory over Essequibo in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and life General Insurance Company (GTM) 50 over inter county U-19 tournament yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club ground.
Man-of-the-match Sankar grabbed 5 wickets for 34 runs from 10 overs as Essequibo were bowled out for 148 in 48.4 overs in reply to the home team’s 193-8 in 50 overs. Demerara won the toss and elected to bat on a track which rendered assistance to the spinners.
They lost Brian Sattaur (00) who was taken at point after he cut at a short delivery from left arm spinner Herry Green in second over without a run on the board. Andrew Gibson (02) was then stumped off Ricardo Adams in the next over at 4-2.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kamesh Yadram took the score to 45 before Chanderpaul was run out for 14 as Demerara found themselves in a spot of bother. Yadram and Kemol Savory then featured in a fourth wicket stand of 55 as the host fought back.
The pair kept the score board ticking and dispatched the bad balls with little trouble. Yadram who hit two fours and two sixes was sent back by Hassam Mohamed for 52 before Adams trapped Cleon Mc Ewan (02) leg before.
Savory was then bowled by Andy Dass for 52 which contained four fours at 152-6. Demerara then lost a few more quick wickets, but Dexter George and Devon Lord added 26 for the ninth wicket to guide them to their eventual total.
Dass claimed 2-17 while Adams took 2-25; there was one wicket each for Green, Mohamed and Rajiv Balgobin. Pacers George and Bernard Bailey put the visitors early on the back foot by removing Avinash Persaud (00) and Ricardo Peters (04) to leave Essequibo at 17-2.
Adams and Mark Gonsalves steadied the chase with a third wicket stand of 59. Adams belted four fours and three sixes before he was caught off Lord for 54 before Gonsalves was dismissed for 08 at 76-4.
Essequibo never really recovered despite a last wicket stand of 21 between Green (13) and Dexter Williams (04). Hassan Mohamed 15 (2×4 1×6) was their next best scorer as Lord 2-32 and George 2-35 supported Sankar.
