The President’s XI defeated defending champions Essequibo by 31 runs while Berbice brushed aside Demerara by 99 runs when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life General Insurance Company (GTM) 50 Over Inter County competition commenced yesterday.
Essequibo won the toss and inserted the President’s XI who were bowled out for 150 in 45.4 overs at the Everest Cricket Club. They were given a solid start by Anthony Bhupdeo and Ryan Shun; the pair added 59 for the first wicket on a pitch which assisted the spinners.
Bhupdeo was the first to go when he was caught off off-spinner Julio Jones for 10 in the 10th over. Jones who extracted some amount of turn from the track then sent back Shivnarine Srikishan (00) with the score on 60.
Shun who played some lovely shots on both sides of the wicket and seemed well set for a half century pushed tentatively forward as was bowled by medium Pacer Rajiv Balgobin for 44; he hit five fours and one six.
Essequibo continued to make inroads into the opposition’s batting as Avishkar Sewkaran who was dropped on the long on boundary off Jones; the ball eventually went for six, was leg before the very next delivery as he attempted a sweep shot, he departed for 18 (1×4 1×6).
Jones then had Vishal Narayan (02) caught by wicket keeper Ricardo Peters to leave the score on 95-5 before Denesh Mangal (01) was removed by Ricardo Adams 6 runs later. Adams then uprooted the stumps of Akeem Wallace (03) before Martin Pestano Bell and Garfield De Roche attempted to steady the innings with an eight wicket stand of 21 before they were separated when Bell was run out for 13.
De Roche who was later named man-of-the-match and Mark Hamilton took the score to 142 but left arm spinner Herry Green sent back De Roche for 29 (1×4 1×6) while Andy Dass sent back Keon Morris (06) leaving Hamilton unbeaten on 03.
Jones was the pick of the bowlers for the Essequibians with 4-26 from 10 overs while Adams had 2-30 from 9. Dass, Balgobin and Green took 1 each.
Essequibo were off to a bad start as De Roche disturbed the stumps of Avinash Persaud (00) with the score 03 in the first over. Fellow opener Jones who stroked De Roche for three fours was removed by Vishal Narayan for 13 at 17-2.
Essequibo fell into further trouble when Shivindra Hemraj (07) was needlessly run out before Mark Gonsalves (03) was bowled by De Roche. Ricardo Adams and Ricardo Peters then steadied the chase somewhat after they were placed at an uncertain 25-4 with a fifth wicket stand of 22 before Peters was caught off Mark Hamilton for 05.
Adams stroked Hamilton for two huge sixes, but then tried to turn Wallace on the onside and gave the bowler a tame return catch for 27 (2×4 2×6) at 68-6. Dass got off the mark with a spanking cover driven boundary off Wallace before hitting him for a maximum. He then punched Ryan Shun off the back foot for another boundary as he and Rajiv Balgobin gave their team hopes with a seven wicket partnership of 36 with aggressive batting.
Balgobin drove De Roche to the long on fence before Dass was stumped off Hamilton for 23 (3×4 1×6) leaving Essequibo tottering at 104-7. Hamilton then removed Green (00) while Narayan accounted for Keisho Rooplall (00) with only one run added to the total.
Balgobin then fashioned a little cameo, he slammed Hamilton and De Roche for boundaries before Hamilton put an end to the contest when he had Balgobin taken at long on for a top score of 28 (1×4 2×6), Essequibo were bowled out for 119 in 28 overs.
Dexter Williams was not out on 04; Hamilton grabbed 4-31 from 6.5 overs while De Roche and Narayan had 2-33 off 6 and 9 overs respectively. Wallace was the other wicket taker with 1-17.
At Albion in Berbice, the host defeated Demerara by 99 runs. Berbice batted first and reached 228 for 4 with Sharaz Ramcharran top scoring with 58.
Devon Lord was the most successful bowler for the visitors with 1-36 from 10 overs while Steven Sankar and skipper Kamesh Yadram also had one each.
Demerara in reply were sent packing for 129 in 48 overs. Shailendra Shameer picked up 4 for 30 from his 10 overs and Derek Narine claimed 2 for 21. Demerara’s skipper Yadram (40), along with left hander Kemol Savor (26) offered resistance.
