A seven wicket haul by Skipper Shawn Pereira propelled Berbice to an innings and 108 runs victory over Essequibo as the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life General Insurance Company (GTM) 3 day Inter County U-19 tournament concluded yesterday.
Pereira bagged 7 wickets for 21 runs from 3.4 overs and got support from Romario Shepherd who claimed 2-45 and Shilander Shameer 1-30 as Essequibo, whose batsmen lacked application, were bowled out for 118 in 22.4 overs in the final session of the second day after trailing by 226 at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary.
Earlier, Berbice resumed on their overnight first innings score of 199-3 and progressed to 340 before they were bowled out just after lunch in 87 overs. David Latchaya and Gudakesh Motie Kanhai took the score to 218 before Latchaya was leg before to Iglesias Van Slytman for 46 (8×4) in the fourth over of the day. Left arm spinner Herry Green, who again bowled excellently, then accounted for Kanhai (14), Dereck Narine (08) and Akeem Hinds (00) in quick succession to leave Berbice at 247-7.
Shilander Shameer and Shawn Perreira added 32 for the eight wicket stand before Pereira was caught off Julio Jones for 15. Green then sent back Shameer for 32 (3×4,3×6) at 289-9 as Essequibo fought back. However the last wicket pair of Kevon Jawahir and Romario Shepherd frustrated the Essequibians with a 51 run partnership before Jawahir backed up too far at the non striker’s end and was run out for 28 (3×4) leaving Shepherd unbeaten on 26 (4×4). Green grabbed 6-147 in 36 overs, but could have proved more economical if he was ably supported by the fielders; Van Slytman 1-10, Julio Jones 1-41 and Ricardo Adams 1-54 were the other wicket takers.
Needing to score 227 to make Berbice bat again, Essequibo openers Julio Jones and Avinash Persaud added 20 before Jones who stroked four fours off Shepherd was taken at second slip off the said bowler. Ricardo Adams replaced Jones and got his innings going with consecutive boundaries off Shepherd before smashing off spinner Latchaya for a straight six. Persaud then hit Latchaya over long on for a maximum, while Adams punched Shepherd to the cover boundary. Adams then attempted to hoist Latchaya out of the ground but was spectacularly caught at long on for 21 (3×4,1×6) at 51.
Persaud and Mark Gonsalves took the score to 79 before Gonsalves missed a full toss and was leg before to Perreira for 09. Persaud featured in a fourth wicket stand of 26 with Andy Dass before Pereira, who turned the ball sharply, accounted for Andy Dass (09) at 105.
Despite the wickets falling around him Persaud continued to play his shots, he lofted Shilander Shameer for a maximum before flicking him to the mid wicket boundary. He then brought up his fifty with a six off the said bowler over long on. Pereira struck once again when he had Rajiv Balgobin(01) brilliantly caught at silly mid off before disturbing the stumps of Herry Green (00) as Essequibo slumped to 112-6. Shepherd then trapped Ricardo Peters (01) who sustained an injury earlier leg before, while Persaud was caught off Perreira for 52; his innings came off 49 balls and contained four fours and four sixes. Pereira then wrapped up the innings with the wickets of Mahindra Balbadar (00) and Van Slytman (04) to hand his team a well deserved victory. He ended with match figures of 9-44 while Shepherd, who claimed 2-45, finished the game with 7 -72.  Shameer 1-10 was the other wicket taker.
