Each child that falls within the top performing one per cent of the 2013 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) will be given a laptop, compliments of the Guyana Government.
This announcement was made by Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, who officially released the results at the National Centre for Education Resource Development (NCERD) yesterday.
The decision, the Minister said, was made by President Donald Ramotar himself, who according to her, is extremely pleased with the performance and the fact that the results have been released early this year.
In fact; the unveiling of the results yesterday was deemed an historic undertaking, as according to the Minister it has been established that this is the earliest that the results have ever been made available.
The results will shortly be made available to schools across the country.
A total of 16,811 candidates participated in the Assessment. And according to the Minister, “We are very proud of our children who took this exam; we are proud of their performance and their consistency over the years.”
The highest possible score obtainable by candidates was 560.
The results revealed that 241 candidates from schools in Regions One, Two, Five, Six, Seven, Nine and Ten are eligible for entry into President’s College, said the Minister who also disclosed that the top 10 positions were shared by 23 candidates.
Minister Manickchand also highlighted that the cut off scores for the Sixth Form Schools were: 525 marks for Queen’s College, 519 marks for Bishop’s High, 515 marks for Saint Stanislaus, 510 marks for St Rose’s Secondary and 506 marks for St Joseph’s High.
Of the top one percent performers, four were from Region Two; 21 from Region Three, 41 from Region Four, nine from Region Six; one from Region Seven, 10 from Region 10; and 87 from Georgetown.
Minister Manickchand added that of the top one per cent of the NGSA candidates 93 were girls and 80 were boys. She explained that because of the several candidates who were allotted the same positions this year, there is a greater number of them named in the top one per cent.
According to the Minister, “This year again we are pleased to see that our investment in equitable distribution of services is paying off and we are seeing that not only children in Georgetown are doing well but children across the country…are doing well.”
Moreover, she assured that this trend will be sustained as Government will remain resolute in its offering of equitable education.
Even as she congratulated the candidates and noted that they will be entering into a new phase of their lives, the Minister underscored that parents and teachers must be equally lauded.
“To the teachers who would have spent a lot of time with these children to help them do the things we expected, we thank you…you are the backbone of our education system and we look forward to working even harder with you.”
The Minister also commended the individuals who marked and supervised the Assessment, adding that they were the ones that also “kept it at a level where our integrity is intact. We expect this kind of support and partnership going forward,” she added.
