School of Nations has organized for a team of four theatre professionals from the USA to offer a three-week theatre arts workshop in July. This will be the first of a series of such workshops and training that the institution will offer over the next four years.
The US team will collaborate with a local team to develop the workshops. An integral element of the plan is the exchange of skills between the American professionals and their Guyanese counterparts.
The Arts Workshop will be broken into two groups; one for children aged 6-11 years and the other for children aged 12-18 years.
For the 6-11 year age group, the focus will be on exploring expression through voice and body in creative play as well as rehearsals for an original theatre piece. For the students aged 12-18 years, the programme extends to exploration of theatre as a tool for individual expression, empowerment and social change. The resource persons will share examples of group theatre for change from around the globe. Students will gain confidence and tools to describe the world around them and articulate change they want to see.
Eva Laporte, one of the organizers of the workshop said, “Through theatre, people learn about how the world works and about themselves, which allows them to dream about how the world could work.” She went on to say, “the workshop will teach invaluable skills like: collaboration and communication, diplomacy, critical thinking and analytical skills, along with building discipline and self-esteem.”
This Arts Workshop aims to inspire youth to be involved in a positive and productive way in the community. The goal is to help the community appreciate the potential of the young people in their midst and recognize the impact their voices can have.
The cost of the workshop is G$25,000 for the three-week course. Booking could be done at the Nations University office at 41 New Market Street; by calling 226-5781 or 227¬4623 or sending an email to otoole.nations@g_mail.com.
The key resource persons for the workshop are:
– Eva Laporte, from Houston, Texas, who has produced a wide range of plays throughout North America. She coordinates the education programmes at a regional theatre in Houston.
– Zach Lewis – a professional actor in the US, who regularly works with new plays through the University of Houston School of Theatre and Dance.
– Theresa O’Toole, who studied at Moscow Art Theatre in Russia and with the O’Neill Theatre Centre in the USA. She has extensive experience of community theatre in USA and internationally.
– Adele Powers – a writer, composer and director who won the Spotlight Award in her state for the Best Youth Production.
– Shaun Reitman – a founding member of the Odyssey Production Company, who has directed work in the New York International Fringe Festival.
The team from the US will be assisted by Rosheni Takechandra who has extensive experience with the performing arts through the very successful Witness Project in Guyana.
