Indra Daniels, 30, of Aurora Essequibo, yesterday faced two charges when he appeared before the Chief Magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The particulars of the first charge stated that on March 21, at Charity, Essequibo, the defendant entered Guyana by sea and failed to present himself to an Immigration Officer. To this, the defendant pleaded guilty. He was subsequently fined $30,000 with an alternative of six months’ imprisonment.
For the second charge, it was alleged that Daniels had in his possession, shotgun cartridges without being the legal holder of a licence. To this allegation, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
On March 21, at Fairfield Essequibo, the police were doing a stop and search on the public road. The car in which there was a passenger was stopped. When the vehicle and the defendant’s bag were searched, police discovered seven shotgun cartridges.
Daniels then related to the police that the cartridges belonged to a guy named “Trini” but when ‘Trini’ was contacted, he denied the allegations. Daniels was subsequently arrested and charged for the said offence.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant has no fixed place of abode and the high possibility that if granted bail, he may flee the jurisdiction.
Bail for the defendant was subsequently refused and the matter was transferred to Suddie Magistrate’s court where the trial is expected to begin on May 16.
