The 30th Congress of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is scheduled to commence on August 2 and conclude on August 4, 2013, at the J.C Chandisingh Secondary School, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
A political party’s congress is called on account of the need to ‘right the wrongs’, to make plans and create goals that would ultimately translate into a productive future for the Government and its people, according to the ruling People’s Progressive Party.
At this 30th Congress, the new Central Committee will be selected. This 35-member Central Committee will be appointed to strategise to obliterate the errors that have been hindering the growth and fruitful productivity of the party, it added.
One of the ‘wrongs’ that is likely to resurface is the question of what went wrong at the 2011 General Elections, causing the PPP/C to lose the majority of the seats in Parliament, thus rendering the party incapable of independent decision.
Another topic for discussion is the issue of whether the post of General Secretary will remain with its current holder, President Donald Ramotar, who is also titled President. According to sources, new blood is to dominate the proceedings.
Also, a potential topic for discussion and debate at the forthcoming congress is the possibility of there being a ‘snap election’, given the current posturing in the National Assembly over the 2013 National Budget.
