Mayor’s Cup football tournament
The Georgetown Football Club (GFC) defeated Beterverwagting Triumph 2-1 to advance to the next round when action in the Mayor’s Cup football tournament continued at the Beterverwagting Community Centre Ground Saturday evening last.
Santos FC was also in winner’s row and carted off the spoils with a 3-0 defeat over Bakewell Buxton Stars.
In the night’s opener, Jermaine Fraser (31st), Ryan Seales (68th) and Jermaine Bamfield (75th) sent Santos FC ahead, while in the feature attraction Teashawn Hicks (2nd) and Reshawn Blackman (14th) netted for GFC to take the honours over Beterverwagting despite Delroy Deene’s 11th minute response for the latter team.
The games were entertaining and it was a pity that the fans did not turn out in their numbers to witness them. Santos FC stamped its authority from the very first whistle when Fraser latched onto a pinpoint pass from his teammate, swiveled on the balls of his feet and slammed in the first success for his team. Thereafter, a ferocious battle ensued as both teams battled for supremacy. In what could be best described as a courageous battle of wits, attacks and counterattacks, Santos retained a staunch defence and eventually prevailed through strikes from Fraser, Seales and Bamfield.
The players traveled over on the West Coast Demerara last night where the Guyana Defence Force tackled Stewartville and Slingertz FC took on Northern Rangers. These results will appear in a subsequent edition.
The action switches to the GFC ground on Wednesday evening with another sizzling double header; Camptown will take on Golden Grove in the night’s opener followed by the Fruta Conqueror’s/ Mahaica FC showdown.
The players are competing for a first prize purse of one million dollars with the runners up carting off half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive $300,000 and $200,000 respectively.
