Those in attendance were treated to an entertaining display of top class hockey when the Hikers and defending champs, GCC, battled for supremacy, at the Bourda ground in the Farfan & Mendes men’s first division hockey league.
This was the lone match remaining at the close of the year to complete the GHB’s 2012 season and it came down to a battle of the top teams vying for what is the most prestigious trophy on the local calendar.
The match began at a feverish pace with GCC making the more purposeful attacks mostly through the forays of overlapping speedy right back, Raphael DeGroot. The Hikers defence, however, made it difficult for GCC to turn productive attacks into genuine scoring opportunities and managed to launch a few threatening counter-attacks of their own.
In the 21st minute of play, DeGroot smashed another of his typical crosses into the Hikers goal area which was deflected by Eric Hing into the path of teammate Patrick Edghill. Edghill slammed his shot into the goal behind Hikers goalkeeper Azad DeAbreu who had advanced to prevent a shot from Hing. GCC gained further confidence from their goal and went into the half time break seemingly in control of the match, leading 1-0.
The Hikers, however, showed their mettle in the second half as they mounted immediate pressure on the GCC defence upon resumption. While strikers Shane Samuels and Robert France were kept relatively quiet thus far through the stifling defence of GCC’s Dwayne Scott and Shad Fernandes, Hikers midfield maestro Devin Munroe pushed up field to offer good support.
GCC seemed to lose their focus midway through the second half and conceded a penalty corner when Samuels was fouled deep in their territory. While the Hikers direct shot was blocked, Colonel Heywood was first onto the rebound and drew the scores at 1-1 with his put back.
There were close shaves at both ends of the pitch, but to no avail due to fine goalkeeping and a few wayward shots.
Hikers finally gained the advantage through a Randy Hope strike in the 81st minute as he capitalized on a weak GCC clearance. The final 9 minutes failed to produce any goals leaving the Hikers to celebrate the 2-1 victory and secure the title of Farfan & Mendes men’s first division champions.
Mr. Leyland Mingo of Farfan & Mendes presented the trophy and medals to the winning team in the presentation ceremony that followed.
