Guyana’s 400m Olympian, Winston George and World Junior 400m finalist, Stephan James continued their ongoing rivalry yesterday in the 200m race of the first Developmental Meet at the Base Camp Ayanganna Ground, Thomas Lands.
George withstood a surging James in the final 50m of the race after an impressive start to clock 20.5s to win the event a split second ahead of James (20.6s). George also won the 100 and 400m races, confirming his place as one of the top local sprinters.
He won the 100m in 10.2s ahead of Akeem Stewart and Chavez Ageday, who clocked 10.5 and 10.8s respectively. George then ensured another showdown with James when he took the 400m race in 48.1s opposed to James’ 48.4 seconds.
Alita Moore continued her impressive form and rise to the top of female sprinting in Guyana with a quick 11.8s to win the women’s 100m over Ebony Nelson who placed second with 12.0 seconds. Moore’s time is among the fastest for women locally.
Tirana Mitchell also established her form and talent with a 12.1s 100m ahead of Onasha Rogers who clocked 12.9s for second in the U-17 race. In the junior male sprint events, Jason yaw was phenomenal, winning both the U-20 100 and 200m races. Kevin Abbensetts was second in both events.
Linden’s middle distance prodigy, Cassey George continued her ascendency following an outstanding performance at the National Schools’ Championships last year and CARIFTA Trials last weekend.
George stopped, tied her shoe laces, and still managed to finish second in the 800m behind her senior counterpart, Jevina Straker. George’s laces were untied when an athlete in the race ran on her running shoes.
Kevin Bayley topped Cleveland Thomas in a wide field in the men’s 1500m. Bayley ran a well-timed race, outsprinting Thomas in the final 150m for the win. Nathaniel Giddings was third in the race.
Wayne Harlequin returned to form in 800m race with a comfortable 1:54.3 run ahead of Devon ‘Scooby’ Barrington (1:55.0), who was second. Nathaniel Giddings won the male 5000m while Alika Morgan won the female 3000m event.
