In an effort to continue its fundamental development of sports, Ansa McAl under its Mackeson Brand yesterday launched the Amelia’s Ward Football Club Mackeson Super16 tournament at the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) Boardroom, Linden.
The grassroots competition will take the format of ‘street football’, commonly called ‘small goal football’ with the top team walking away with $250,000 and the Championship Trophy; second place will pocket $150,000 and trophy; third place $100,000 and trophy and fourth place $40,000 and trophy.
It commences on February 24 with the knockout round, before continuing on February 27 with the quarterfinals, and March 2 with the semi-finals and finals. The venues include the hard-courts at Amelia’s Ward and the Mackenzie Sports Club.
Mackeson Brand Manager, Jamaal Douglas said that Mackeson is pleased to be associated with sports in Linden. “We are happy to be in Linden and to be associated with football in Linden. It shows how interested we are with the development of sports in Linden and I want to reiterate that we’re here to stay,” Douglas indicated.
He said that there will be lots of interactive promotions to get the fans involved where there will be giveaways on game nights. In addition, he said the Most Valuable Player (s) will also receive prizes. He urged communities to support their respective teams.
Amelia’s Ward Football Club, which placed second in the last Kashif and Shanghai tournament after losing to Buxton FC, will coordinate the competition. Its Vice-President, Patrick Dey said that Ansa McAl must be lauded for such pilot projects.
“I believe Mackeson is making this a pilot project that they hope to continue in the future. They must be applauded for ensuring that the potential of players are unearthed in these ways,” Dey said, adding that real talent is usually on display at such competitions.
He said that the next stage when the tournament is fully developed will be to ensure that players transition from the ‘street ball’ level to playing for top clubs and eventually Guyana. However, he was of the view that the platform for talent-spotting is critical for the development of the sport and hopes that Mackeson continues with such projects.
He echoed the sentiments of Ansa McAl Public Relations Officer, Darshnie Yussuf, who chaired the proceedings and indicated that Ansa McAl has been active in efforts to see sport develop across Guyana, and highlighted Mackeson’s role in grassroots sports projects.
Mackeson also hosts an annual three-on-three basketball competition across Guyana, which dolls out a whopping $1M to the winner. Yussuf said that a similar response is anticipated from what’s expected to be an intense competition among the 16 teams in Linden.
