A total of 5777 babies were delivered by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Maternity Unit last year, according to the Unit’s senior Departmental Supervisor, Sister June Cato.
The Supervisor made this disclosure yesterday, while adding that officials from the health institute are currently discussing future plans for the Maternity Unit.
According to Sister Cato, the main focus of GPHC’s Maternity Unit is to educate the staff as well as the patients about their health and in some cases, their families, because they too play a role in the patient’s wellbeing.
“We are currently in a meeting discussing the plans for 2013. We are doing it in quarters, because we don’t want to do it too long and then not achieve it,” the Supervisor said.
She also added that a social worker is stationed 24 hours-a-day at the Maternity Unit. “We realized that there are lots of small issues that need a social worker.” The social worker would meet with patients on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, 40 hampers were presented to the GPHC for mothers in the Maternity Unit who may be in need of the basic post natal necessities, by the Rotary Club of Georgetown in collaboration with Courts.
President of the Association, Khalil Alli said that the club has been in existence for the past 50 years and “we have endeavoured to provide service with effective projects, targeting communities in need.”
He added that the improvement of maternal and child health is one of the areas that the club focuses on and “given the high proportion of maternity cases handled by the public health system, and in particular the Georgetown Hospital, we felt it was appropriate to focus our efforts towards the needs of the users of this hospital.”
Pamphlets were also donated by Mike’s Pharmacy for use by expectant mothers. The leaflets demonstrate the negative symptoms a pregnant woman should look out for. It also advises the persons to visit their midwife or doctor if they experience any of the symptoms shown in the diagram.
The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan, thanked the NGO for making the contribution. He urged the expectant moms to pay keen attention to the leaflets, “read it so that when you come to the hospital we have less complication, and I hope all those women who become pregnant not only come to the hospital but go to the nearest health centre to seek pre-natal care because it is very important.”
Khan again thanked the Organisation for the “kind donation” while noting that there are many persons who visit the hospital for delivery and don’t have the basic necessities.
