The Trinidad & Tobago-based Guyanese distance running ace, Lionel D’Andrade was described in Suriname newspapers as a “master of distance running”. For the third consecutive year, he has written his name atop the Bigi Broki Waka 10km Road Race.
D’Andrade completely annihilated the field in what he described yesterday as a comfortable race that presented no challenges at all. He told Kaieteur Sport that he was happy to start the year on a winning
note and will be looking ahead to another productive year.
“It’s always good to start the year on a winning note and this means well for me and to be able to establish myself in the history of Suriname as winning this race three years in a row for Guyana, also means a lot,” He said, describing his climb on the Wijdenbosch Bridge as one of the most challenging parts of the race.
D’Andrade ran 36:03 to win ahead of Suriname’s, Xiverio Simison 36:25 and Rochini Vorswijk 37:00. Suriname’s female distance queen, Ilsida Toemere (43:36) won that version of the race as Caroline Marlet (43:51) and Xiomara Faithful (47:11) finished second and third.
D’Andrade said the race was warm up for his other title defence on January 21 at the colossal Trinidad and Tobago International Half Marathon.
