The Guyana Police Force has recorded another successful year for the Rosemary Lane Youth Club saying that the initiative has led to a significant reduction of criminal activities in the Tiger Bay area, and that the progress being made is encouraging.
The Rosemary Lane Youth Club is a police initiative that has been in existence for 21 years; it is comprised of children who reside in the so called “depressed community” of what is popularly called Tiger Bay.
Yesterday, speaking on the behalf of the Force at the annual Christmas luncheon for the youth club, Assistant Commissioner Winston Cosbert was able to initiate broad smiles on the faces of children in attendance.
Cosbert, the Acting Crime Chief, told the children that the Force “will never give up on you, you can count on us to always be there.”
He praised the ranks who are integrally involved in the children’s lives, providing them with good role models.
In an invited comment, Cosbert disclosed that the programme has led to numerous members joining the Police Force, while some of them went on to play cricket for Guyana.
He added that most others have maintained practices of being good contributing members of society.
Through songs, dances, poems and a skit, the youths proved that they are making use of the lessons taught. The youngsters entertained the audience comprising Senior Officers and other ranks.
The skit brought out a clear message that there should be no place for domestic violence in society.
Cosbert presented a few of the outstanding performers with monetary rewards while all those who participated received Christmas gifts.
An overview of this year’s activity indicated that the children were involved in spiritual sessions and teachings, table tennis training, lectures on the ills of drug trafficking, English and Mathematics, Information Technology and sessions on Phonics and Reading.
The programme has allowed ranks to contribute to the growth and development of youths.
It has been previously noted that the programme helps to build the interpersonal relationship skills of youths, instill good religious values and craft an alternative method for youths of depressed communities to express themselves.
Additional work is expected to be done in the coming year.
The need to work with parents was identified and it was disclosed that plans for parental training sessions are in the making.
Continuing in that vein, Cosbert encouraged fathers to be role models and become more involved in their children’s lives.
“Don’t be holiday fathers,” he urged.
