Detectives are still searching for a motive in the shooting death of 76-year-old Saheed Hamid at his Maida, Corentyne home.
A post mortem conducted yesterday revealed that he was shot at close range with a small caliber handgun.
Death was due to shock and hemorrhage.
Police revisited the scene yesterday and questioned Hamid’s neighbours who could not recall seeing any strangers in the area or any suspicious movements near to the victim’s home.
Residents who spoke to Kaieteur News also said that they were also puzzled as to why anyone would have wanted to kill the elderly farmer, who had no enemies that they knew of.
Robbery did not appear to be a motive. Kaieteur News was told that robbers had attacked Mohamed and his wife some years ago. The intruders reportedly left empty-handed after finding nothing of value.
Hamid, called ‘Uncle Tulu’, was shot in the chest around 02:30 hrs on Sunday after venturing outside to use a latrine.
Some have suggested that he may have unintentionally surprised robbers who were lurking in the area.
The victim and his wife, Nazmoon, lived alone.
Mrs. Hamid told Kaieteur News that her husband was in the habit of getting up before dawn to go to the latrine at the back of the couple’s yard.
She said she was in bed at around 02:30 hrs when she heard Mr. Hamid shout “what the (expletive) yall doing hey.” She said that he then shouted “Naz, come”.
The woman said that she then heard an explosion, but she assumed that the person her husband had seen had shattered a light bulb outside the house.
Mrs. Hamid said she ventured outside and saw him lying in the yard near the back door.
He attempted to crawl back into the house but then stopped and lay motionless.
Mr. Hamid cultivated cash crops and the couple also sold fruits from their yard.
