– Rivalry sets tone as Nationals commence
By Edison Jefford
Rupununi’s Samuel Kaitan extended his winning streak against Upper Demerara’s distance ace, Nathaniel Giddings yesterday when the hinterland-based athlete impressively dominated the 10k Road Race course of the National Schools Championships.
The race was the first of the 2012 edition of Ministry of Education and Guyana Teachers’ Union Digicel-sponsored National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships.
It presented and intense ongoing rivalry among the two athletes.
Kaitan battled with Giddings throughout the course that is also used for the South American 10k where Giddings had defeated Kaitan a few weeks ago, but Kaitan was intent on turning the tables on Giddings winning his third of four head-to-head battles.
He completed the race in 35:30, grimacing and giving two thumbs up at the finish line for a job well done. Giddings ran 36:16 while North Georgetown, District 11, Devaun Barrington finished third in 36:44. West Coast Berbice’s Grivon Grant was fourth in 37:46 with East Coast Demerara Ornesto Thomas (40:20) rounding off the top five in the event.
The girls’ event was also another thriller with seasoned campaigner and much more resilient and seemingly stronger, Adama Roberts, representing East Georgetown, entering the Police Sports Club at Eve Leary about 10 metres ahead of North Georgetown’s Jevina Straker.
However, Straker managed to close the gap on the back-straight, drawing parallel with Roberts before easing away with about 150m left in the race. Straker won in 44:20 with Roberts second in 44:30 and Rupununi’s Regina John third in 46:27; West Coast Berbice’s Cassieanna Young (47:55) was fourth and Essequibo Coast’s Jemima Wilson (50:22) was fifth.
Meanwhile, later in the day at the Rudolph Harper Facility at the YMCA, Thomas Lands, Upper Demerara’s ace, Kelanie Griffith showed her class in the Under-16 Long and Triple Jumps, winning the former and falling metres short in the latter.
Griffith leaped to 4.91m to win the Long Jump ahead of Essequibo Islands’ Keesha Tucker (4.74m) and Rupununi’s Tonica Anthon (4.60m) respectively. New Amsterdam’s Jomul Butts jumped 5.81m to win the Boys Under-16 event with Upper Demerara’s, Kelon Primo (5.61m) second and East Coast Demerara Joel Thom (5.58m) third.
Thom returned to win the Triple Jump event with a leap of 12.04m with Corentyne’s Nathaniel Jordan (11.90m) second and New Amsterdam’s Ryan Bramble (11.90m) third.
In the Girls Under-18 Long Jump, South Georgetown’s Tasnica Lovell with 4.88m had the top mark with Upper Demerara’s Shannon Griffith 4.88m second and North Georgetown’s Shoquane Daniels (4.22m) third.
Miguel Williams sprang to 6.28m to win the Boys Under-18 event with North Georgetown’s Kevin Abbensetts 6.27m second and Upper Demerara’s Samuel Gray 6.10m third. North Georgetown’s Neil Gordon 6.10m effort was the best mark in the Boys Under-20 category with West Demerara’s Devon Browne 5.95m second and Essequibo Coast Eon Osborne (5.88m) third.
