Pedestrians continue to head the list of road fatalities so far this year. Figures released by the police show that up to October last year, 27 pedestrians were killed on the country’s roads.
Pedal cyclists and drivers at 17 each, were the other high road casualties; this is in addition to 12 motorcyclists
Overall there is a decline in the number of fatalities up to the end of October this year with 90 deaths compared with 98 last year a drop of 8.1 percent.
The year also continues to see reductions in relation to the other categories of traffic accidents – serious, minor and damage.
According to the police, speeding continues to be a major contributory factor to fatal accidents, causing 63 of the 83 fatal accidents so far.
The police ‘A’ division which encompasses Georgetown and the East Bank of Demerara has so far accounted for the highest number of fatalities with 32, while the East Coast of Demerara has seen 24 road deaths so far.
Again this year, September and August continue to be the deadliest months in terms of road fatalities, with 17 and 14 deaths respectively.
Speeding caused 63 of the road deaths, while inattentiveness caused 18.
In response, traffic enforcement by the police has resulted in a total of 56,809 cases being made at the end of October this year. Of this total, 12,218 cases were for speeding.
Private cars were involved in the most fatal accidents – 42, while motor lorries accounted for 33.
Meanwhile five more road fatalities have been recorded so far for the month of November 2012.
Wednesday night the police at Bartica recorded another fatal accident this one occurring around 16:30 hours that day at Lion Mountain.
Information reaching this newspaper indicated that a passenger, Wayne Samuels, who was in an open back pick-up perished when the vehicle turned turtle on a treacherous stretch of road in the area.
A source at Bartica told Kaieteur News that the driver of the vehicle was driving at a fast rate and lost control of the vehicle at a spot where several other accidents have occurred.
Another passenger, Frederick Stephens, sustained injuries to his neck and hands. All told four people sustained injuries.
