The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has launched yet another investigation, this time in relation to the death of an eight-month-old, Jaheim Niles, who died at the institution’s Accident and Emergency Unit (A&E) last Monday.
The infant was rushed to the hospital by his 19-year-old mother, Kinsha Gillis, early Monday morning, after she was instructed by nurses at the East La Penitence Health Centre that the child’s condition was critical.
The mother reportedly took the child to GPHC, and handed over the referral letter she received from the Health Centre to the doctor on duty but was told to remain in the waiting area even though the doctor was apparently aware that the child was suffering from an asthma attack.
After waiting awhile, the child was then taken to the A&E for treatment, where he was given oxygen until he succumbed later that day.
Yesterday, at the family’s Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Drive, Georgetown residence, the child’s uncle, Nkosi Gillis told Kaieteur News that he blamed the child’s death on the lack of proper supervision within the medical team.
He explained that his family first learnt about the infant’s illness last Saturday when he was rushed to the hospital. “His mother took him to the hospital and they did an x-ray and the doctor told her that the child had asthma and he couldn’t breathe on his own. They give him oxygen and some medication and they sent him home,” the uncle claimed.
The baby’s uncle recalled his sister rushing the child to GPHC on Sunday but again, the infant was sent home for the second time. “What I can’t understand is that the doctors dem know that this child can’t breathe on his own and yet they sending him home.”
He added “When my sister took him (infant) on Monday, the doctors waited until the child’s lip turn blue before they give him an injection.”
Kaieteur News was told that the child’s mother was not immediately informed that the child had passed away. It was only when she went back into the room to check on her son that she saw the infant was already wrapped and was ready to be taken to the morgue.
A post mortem examination is expected to be done today.
