Prison officers to showcase talent at Inter-Prisons Athletic Championships

Officers of the New Amsterdam Prison Service (NAPS) are currently undergoing stringent practice sessions in preparation for the Inter-Prisons Athletic Championships scheduled to get underway at the All Saints Church Ground, New Amsterdam, August 24th – 26th next.
Athletes would be drawn from 6 locations including the New Amsterdam, Mazaruni, Lusignan, Timehri and the Georgetown Prison Service as well as Prison Headquarters, Brickdam.
Athletes will vie for honours in 43 events and Officer in Charge of the NAPS, Superintendent Carl Graham said that all systems are in place for an action packed day. He said that these championships have always been fiercely contested and at the last meet staged in 2010, Georgetown Prisons had eked out victory by a mere point. He said that athletes from his unit are anxious to reverse their fortunes and have heightened training sessions.
Mr. Graham said that he is backing several of his athletes to scorch the track including Kevin ‘Show Stopper’ Pilgrim who will be contesting the 100m sprint and the officers U-45 event. Several other names have been touted to bring honours to the New Amsterdam facility including Clive Martin (100 & 200m), Tamela David (400 & 800m), Olivia Cox (100 & 200m) and Clive Martin (100 & 200m).
Other events to be contested include senior officers’ sprint, Shot Put, Javelin, Discus High and Broad Jumps and Tug-o-War among others.
Meanwhile, activities will get underway on Saturday August 25 when Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine grace the March Past and is scheduled to take the salute at the All Saints Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam.
