Baby boy dies under suspicious circumstances
- Granny detained
Police have detained a 54-year-old grandmother from ‘A’ Field, Sophia, following the sudden death of a baby boy that was in her care.
Investigators confirmed that they are investigating reports that the child was the victim of prolonged physical abuse.
Four-month-old Kevon Jordan, of Thirteenth Street, ‘A’ Field Sophia, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Accident and Emergency Unit on Wednesday night, shortly after developing breathing problems and being rushed there by his grandmother and stepfather.
The grandmother was arrested at the GPHC.
She was still in custody last night and police are likely to perform a post mortem on the young victim’s remains today.
Kaieteur News understands that the baby’s grandmother told hospital staff that Kevon had fallen off a bed. But a staffer allegedly notified the police after observing suspicious bruises on the baby’s face.
A source said that the nature of the injuries led the staffer to suspect that the bruises were not sustained during a fall.
Kevin Maloney, the baby’s stepfather, is adamant that the baby died of natural causes. According to Maloney, baby Kevon has had a cold since birth.
According to information, the baby was brought to the hospital shortly before 01:00hrs yesterday, panting for breath and with bruises on his face.
The baby’s stepfather, Kevin Maloney, and his (Maloney’s) mother, rushed the baby to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At the Turkeyen Police Station yesterday, the grandmother told Kaieteur News that her son had brought the baby to her home about a month ago and told her that the baby’s mother had gone into the interior for two weeks.
She said the baby appeared to be malnourished and was “tiny”.
“My son bring the baby and tell me that he (the baby) mother gone in the bush for two weeks and he ask me to take care of the baby. The baby look malnourish and he had a terrible cold and every time you feed he, he don’t want eat, he only crying,” she said.
She said that the baby fell off the bed, forcing them to rush him to the hospital. She also claimed that the bruises on the baby’s face were as a result of the fall.
The woman’s stepson claimed that when he arrived home shortly after 09:00hrs on Wednesday, he found the baby lying face down on the concrete floor.
“When I come home, my mother went to the shop, and I see the baby on the floor and then my sister said ‘oh he fall, I hear he was crying, but I think he wake up and was crying on the bed.’
“I then pick him up and put him on the bed and a while after he start cry and I pat him to try to put him to sleep.”
Maloney said he then realized that the baby was panting for breath and he informed his mother and they took the child to the hospital, where he eventually succumbed.
The man also claimed that the baby had contracted gastroenteritis, but had not been given medication for some time.
