Woman stabbed, beaten in head with hammer
- lover drinks poison
A 40-year-old man yesterday battered his 38-year-old lover in her head with a hammer then stabbed her in the chest, mouth and twice in the abdomen before ingesting a dose of poisonous liquid in an attempt to take his own life.
The woman, Sharon Goodridge also called Sharon Howell of Lot 81 East La Penitence, Georgetown is now clinging on to life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The mother of 10 underwent emergency operation which lasted several hours.
Doctors said that she sustained a fractured skull and significant damage to her brain and gave her a 50/50 chance of survival.
Her lover, Colbert Rodney is presently under police guard in the GPHC’s Male Medical Ward.
The man, with a smile on his face, proudly waved at Goodridge’s relatives as they stared at him while he was on the hospital’s bed.
His action angered the woman’s relatives who abandoned “the millions” of questions they had for him.
According to the woman’s daughter, Goodridge, who has a child with the suspect works at a popular fish shop in D’Urban Street.
The couple has been together for almost two years.
On Saturday last they began arguing over “some woman” and according to the victim’s 10-year-old daughter, the man started to pack his bags, telling her mother that he was moving to go live with his brother in Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
She explained that the suspect went to the back of the house and came back with a hammer. Her mother who was at the time sitting on a chair, got up when she saw her attacker approaching.
“Mom get up and he push her down and start stabbing her then he take the hammer and hit her,” the woman’s daughter claimed.
While Goodridge’s attacker was bashing her with the hammer, her 10-year-old daughter was accidentally injured by the suspect’s actions.
Kaieteur News understands that after the 10-year-old girl started screaming, her 16-year old brother woke up and ran downstairs and saw his mother motionless on the chair.
He tried to grab the suspect to prevent him from escaping but backed off after Rodney threatened to stab him too.
Rodney then fled to his brother’s home in Diamond where he consumed the poison.
Yesterday, when Kaieteur News visited the victim’s home, the chair and a sheet were covered with blood.
Tamika James, the victim’s other daughter said that she was upstairs when the two came home rowing. She claimed that “rowing and fighting” is a normal thing for the couple so she tried to ignore them.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect was arrested on numerous occasions but the 38-year-old woman would often go and plead with the police to release him. The two also went to court sometime last year.
James claimed sometime last year that her mother’s attacker stabbed her on her neck, causing her to receive multiple stitches.
She said the matter was reported but she is not aware what had transpired but claimed that the suspect moved in back a few days after.
James said that Rodney’s sister had warned her mother.
“His sister tell her that she need to get rid of him because he injure many women before.”
She further claimed that everybody had warned her mother about the suspect but she never listened.
“She said she get herself in it and she will get herself out,” the daughter declared.
“My mother is from Barbados and she came back here because of some circumstances with us and that is how she end up staying here so long and eventually met him.”
A neighbour, Cranston Johnson and his wife rushed the badly injured woman to the hospital. The woman’s relatives yesterday thanked the couple for their support.
“I think the hospital did a great job by putting the Police Outpost there and the police officer was very helpful and kind,” a neighbour stated.
